During the year, MBBA holds 2 events for our members.

Spring Meet

I'm proud to announce our 57th annual Spring Meet will be held on May 18, 19 and 20th 2007, at Scusset State Park. The order is in for good weather and preparations are under way. As always, volunteers are needed to help out at booths and the casting contests.  If anyone is interested in helping out, I can be contacted by email; ifixcars@aol.com. With some new ideas and some great prizes to be offered at this year's meet, I'm looking forward to a great turnout this year as it looks to be promising and welcome all to come.

Tom Gagnon
MBBA Vice President

The Spring Meet is held every year. There is a general meeting to conduct general business, and the rest of the weekend is for fun and reuniting old acquaintances. The Spring Meet is mainly for the kids, which includes games, casting, fishing and poster contests, 25 cent hot dog dinner, a dance on Saturday night, and another casting contest on Sunday.

Everill MacKay Memorial Fishing Derby

We also sponsor the Everill MacKay Memorial Fishing Derby, held one weekend in the fall on Sandy Neck Beach, Located in Barnstable MA. Directions, Take Route 6 East, to Exit 3, Quaker Meeting House Road.  At top of Ramp, take left, go to very end, which intersects with Route 6A, take a right on 6A East, follow approx 3miles, look for Sandy Neck Motel and Sandy Neck Road on Left, take left on Sandy Neck Road and follow to end at Gate Shack.

The Everill MacKay derby started in September 1993, to honor Everill Mackay, who was an active MBBA member who fished Duxbury Beach MA. His untimely death triggered a response from all those who knew him and wanted to keep his memory alive. One of his closest Friends was the Beach Representative for Duxbury, Frank Chipman. Frank started and ran the first 4 derbies until his untimely death. The first two derbies were held on Duxbury beach MA. Starting with the third and up to now, the rest of the derbies have been held on Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, MA on Cape Cod.

The 14th Annual Everill MacKay Derby was held on Sandy Neck Beach from 21st to the 23rd of September 2007. This years weather was atypical for the first fall weekend on Cape Cod. It was calm and beautiful Friday night, and Saturday and Sunday saw warm temps and light winds, both onshore and offshore, but with little fish. This year’s derby only saw 85 people participating with 64 people actively fishing. This was an increase over last years attendance. The break down by division was:

2007 Adult Male and over all winner -
Richard Harding

Adult Male – 46
Adult Female – 13
Junior Male -3
Junior Female -2

For a total of 64 people fishing

The over all winner of the Derby with the largest fish was Richard Harding with a 32.5” Blue Fish. Rich was awarded the Everill MacKay Perpetual Trophy, 2 Fall Banquet Tickets, where he will formally accept the trophy from Last Years Winner Fred Amaral. The Winner of the Junior Male Division was Chris Bates with a 20” Skate. There were no fish weighed in from the Women’s or Junior Female Division.

Congrats to all.

All division winners were awarded Plaques, a Patch and a cash prize. This derby generated $128.00 to the MBBA General Fund, and $113.00 to the MBBA Legal Fund from Tee Shirt Sales. I hope everyone had a great time, and I look forward to next years Derby, lets make it one to remember. Thanks to all who helped me make this derby what it is today. Don Fillman
